One of the devs, peggy1303, mentioned that they’re considering making the first update free. Nothing is confirmed yet, but it’s something they're thinking about. This came up in response to a user's question on Discord.
Personally, I prefer not to judge too quickly. It seems normal to me that he and his colleague are encouraging people to fund the game to help get the project on track. I imagine they've had to cover a lot of costs themselves—like software, assets, models, hardware, and so on—just to get SI’s development going. I don’t think everything in this field is free.
It’s clear that something like this was probably inevitable, whether now or later, so it doesn’t change much in my view. But of course, everyone has their own opinion. No one is obligated to support them financially. Those who are more cautious can always wait for the first release to judge the game’s quality or look for a future leak or share here.
I’ve included below the reference to peggy1303’s message and the original question posted by a Discord user for some context.

@ peggy1303 " is the first update initially going to be locked behind patreon? I feel like it should definitely start public so people can get an idea of quality before having to pay anything like a 0.1 I guess "

" it's something we are thinking about and we will announce closer to the time of release, but nothing set in stone yet but we will let you all know when we make a decision "
I recommend checking out Peggy1303's messages in the "general" channel on Discord if you're interested. They share some useful info, like what Flynn was somewhat planning for his update, behind-the-scenes details, and ideas he and his colleague would like to see in the game.
