Dev Update #49

Hi everyone, hope you had a good week. A few things to get through:
E4 Progress
My week was fairly busy and I've mostly been focused on the E4 animations which are going well but there's still a lot to do. Apart from animations this week I also refined the designs of some of the extra characters you'll meet in E4 and also spontaneously decided to revamp the main menu. Aside from the little easter egg I think the old main menu looked pretty bland and underwhelming. The text especially. So I've gone for a different look, nothing super interesting but I think it looks much more polished and I'm pretty happy with it.

Android Version (E1-3 Android releasing tomorrow)
Long overdue, it's finally done. It's very, very far from perfect but I just had to get it done so that it's not constantly plaguing me. Pretty much everything works well except for the one big thing that I was worried about - animations. The animations are really really laggy. If your phone is much better than mine then maybe it might be fine - I've only tested it on one phone and the animations did not look good. So I really need to stress this - for the best experience please play Elmwood on pc or mac.
If any of you know of ways I could optimise renpy videos for android then please let me know - I always appreciate advice on things I'm unfamiliar with and I'm very unfamiliar with building for android. I know that there are other android avns which are very well optimised and can play animations efficiently even on lower end devices but I haven't managed to achieve this yet - sorry.
Aside from animations I've managed to make everything else work fairly well. All the menus/interface and even HaremWars seem to not have any issues but if you encounter any bugs then please do let me know. I've done very limited testing on this as I'm trying to just focus on E4. This Android version is basically the exact version of the game as the Bronze E3 release in December. That means there are some minor typos which I'm aware of.
I'll be releasing the Android version tomorrow for all paid members. However, if you were a paid subscriber in December, January or February but aren't anymore and want the Android version then just send me a private message and I'd be happy to give you the download. It was my intention to release the Android version in January so everyone who was subbed around then is absolutely entitled to it.

1 Year Anniversary
Guess what? Yep, Elmwood officially turns 1 year old on the 15th. Truly the most surreal year of my life. It's not been easy by any means but developing Elmwood has been the most incredible decision I've ever made. I wouldn't be able to do it without your support and it is such a privilege for me to have this amazing community supporting me every step of the way. You guys rock.
Thank you for everything and cheers to another great year!

whatever you're doing sir, keep doing it, cuz this game is kickass fun. there's usually some part of a AVN that i find tedious, annoying, doesn't make sense...at some point...they all let me down. not this one. i've prob played this through a thousand times. no bugs. no glitches. no part where the MC starts acting like a girl or a guy with ethics....fantastic....noice!

Dev Update #50

Just now

Hi everyone, work is going well but I'm extremely busy with tonnes to do so I'll try to keep this brief.
E4 is progressing well but I need to tell you that I'm still a long way from completion and this will be the slowest of the 3 updates I'm aiming to release this year. E4 is going to be quite a big step in a number of ways which are causing development to take longer than E3. You might assume that I'm talking about branching choices and pathing here but that's actually not the case at all. E4 is going to be quite a big chapter in terms of story progression especially and this means you'll meet a lot of new characters who are going to be quite important to things going forward.

There are a lot of things I'm having to create for E4 for the first time which are slowing me down now but won't slow down future episodes. I don't want to give any spoilers but I'm sure a lot of you will guess that the one faction of students who have been referenced a lot but are currently unseen will sooner or later make an appearance. So there's been a lot of time spent here on character design, outfits, and story cohesion. On top of these characters I also of course spent some time a couple of weeks ago future proofing all the main 18 girls so that I wouldn't need to change them again in future. I'm really pleased with how all characters are looking and I'll probably show you E4 Naomi soon - she's the only one who's had non-minor changes.
But all this combined with some of the extra things I'm trying to do with renders and animations to improve overall quality has meant that I am behind where I want to be at this stage. I wanted to use this dev update to manage expectations of where I am. I'm still working on the animations and will hopefully start powering through the still renders in a couple of weeks. This is going to be the most important update so far and so there are just a lot of things I need to work on.
But I don't want you to think updates are going to get slower every episode - this isn't really the case it's just that E4 involves a lot of first time content (e.g. meeting some characters for the first time, gameplay features for the first time etc.) Weirdly E4 actually has a lot in common with E1.

So it's kinda strange - I can't give you an estimate for E4 but I can give you an estimate for E6 (still end of this year, in line with my target of 3 eps in 2025). I'm working hard to develop E4,5 & 6 to as high a quality as possible rather than just delivering E4 as fast as possible. I hope this makes sense.

Thank you for your continued support and all the Elmwood birthday wishes :)
