Soooooooooo, if I understand correctly, Unreal Engine 4 ver game has been abandoned, and the developers have completely switched to Unreal Engine 5? I would like to see some of the content from the 4th version in the 5th... I bought the Steam version a long time ago, but I haven't noticed much progress, or the authors simply don't update the Steam version...-_-

As far as I know the UE4 version on Steam is the standard branch and to play the UE5 version you need to opt in to the beta branch. And the beta branch is getting updates.

I enabled (the beta) in the summer, and there’s really a lot of content, even some kind of introductory storyline, not just "YOU APPEARED, NOW GO WHEREVER YOU WANT"... That’s why it seemed to me that the developers wouldn't focus on the old version and would put their efforts into the new one. (For curiosity's sake, I installed the old version again and I must say they’ve significantly improved the game’s optimization. Almost all settings are set to ULTRA.) At first reliase vers, I couldn’t even set it to MINIMUM (the game felt like a turn-based strategy ^_^)...

That's a bit of an odd explanation.
No one will focus on UE4 because it is not sustainable. Making two different versions of the one game at once for a small team is nonsense. They decided to throw away the 10 years old engine and replace it with a new one a redesign the game (People didn't like the combat system for example).
"YOU APPEARED, NOW GO WHEREVER YOU WANT - It was simply not a priority for them in that time, just a placeholder - play-test-fuck-die-respawn.

So, I've done everything to complete the Prodigal Son quest (done twice, actually) yet the farmer ignores it all and won't let me tun it in.

Well, np, it is not an important quest at all, just another one to add to the list of current bugs.

That quest worked fine for me when I went through it on this version, but I started a brand new game. Did you load a previous save or was this on a new game. I can't say I have an answer for you other than deleting the carnalinstinct folder in appdata, but it is just strange that it worked fine for me, but others are having issues with it.

Some old bugs got fixed, some didn't, and many more bugs added.
No new content at all.
Everything that was underway, remained underdeveloped.
And instead of improvement in performance, they made the game totally unplayable on low end PC's (which were able to handle it before).

UE4 will only stay around till the UE5 version reaches the same content as the old version had. After it, the UE5 version will be moved from the beta branch to the standard branch on Steam. Not sure though if they will keep the old UE4 version at the beta branch for nostalgia.
