Just my 2 cents, but... why put all that power into one pc and not 2 or 4 separate ones?

Build a little render farm. That way you can get away with smaller PSUs, 4 "normal" ones probably being cheaper as 1 really big one or 2 big ones - especially when you need to replace one.
Also as a bonus you get redundancy. If one blows you have 1 to 3 renderers still running, not a complete fallout.
The hardware besides the PSU could probably be extremely streamlined, if additional machines do nothing but render. Pretty cheap board/cpu/ram, GPUs you already have, maybe still a fast SSD for reading/writing data (or a small ssd-nas for having source and output files centralized - but then you'd have to invest a bit in the network. maybe going for 2.5gbit or even 10gbit).

As I said... just my 2 cents. And without knowing how 4 GPUs in one machine would even get separate jobs (was SLI still a thing with 3090s or would SLI even make sense there?) or what your renderer is and if separate software licenses would make this prohibitively expensive or whatever.

I learned something. Something I wish I would have known a couple of weeks ago. :)
Thanks to dluser & c3p0 for explaining it to me. Now that I understand it does make sense.

The guy from the local computer shop was kind enough to let me borrow a couple of his used PSUs he had laying around, the pair I ordered should be in by the end of the week.

Good idea. Except AFAIK daz doesn't support SLI, and Nvidia's NVLINK doesn't work with their consumer cards.

Still... good idea. I honestly never thought of having smaller machines crunching away slower - I've been fixated on making my single box run faster. Your different approach is a great suggestion. Nice thinking outside the box.

Also I can recommend Seasonic for PSU. They make some of the best (my opinion), they have up to 12 years warranty period and have 80plus certified PSU up to titanium level. That means at least 90% efficency between 10% and 100% load - thus a PSU with 2000W output power "only" produce 222 W heat.

well... what are you doing with 4 gpus in one machine, if it doesn't utilize sli? 4 render jobs at once on one machine, each using a different gpu?

i never used daz, so i don't know if you would have to pay some fees of theirs 4 times, if you run it on 4 machines instead of 4 times on one machine or whatever you are doing right now, so i can't suggest anything there (except maybe exporting to a free open source renderer and then rendering there... - which would probably make you able to run on linux machines and thus not paying for multiple windows licenses additionally to the added hardware).
but yeah, multiple machines sounds like the way to go if you use the serious power of 4 3090 gpus.

Maybe the iray-server is something for you.
Works with windows and linux.
Works for animations and images directly from Daz Studio
And it's free of charge...

No.

Daz recognizes your cards and runs them all at the same time. 4 gpu = 4x faster rendering. 2x faster than I was with only 2 cards. And the software itself is free.

And now that I've finally figured how to get everything to run... should be smooth sailing.

Thanks for the tip, trust me I've thought about it. A lot. But I prefer to do all my renders "in house", I would rather not have to depend on anybody else. And in the long run it works out a lot cheaper to run your own gig.

As long as you're not popping video cards .

It was an expensive lesson. But I learned it.

As long as I have my patreon page on hold for this month, I figured I would take a few days off and get all caught up with my backlog. Figure... 3 weeks?

It's the first time I've taken a break since I started making games.
you announced that you're taking a break about 6 hours ago, we miss you already !!

sorry for the really bad photoshop job, i haven't used it since 1999, that's when me & Prince used to party all the time.
thanks to Dr.TSoni for the stock image link

With what I understand of iray, it is just a server application and some clients if using multiple pcs. the "iray server network" as such is YOUR network. This IS for rendering "in house".

you install the server application and a client application on your workstation (or only the server if you don't want to render on that machine as well) and use 1 or more additional pcs which basically just have an operating system - windows or linux in this case, probably even mixed - and the render client installed. you then control the render jobs from the machine with the server running on it and the others do literally nothing except rendering.

this would probably also enable you to work on your images and animations on the pc with the server while 3 other pcs with only the client keep happily rendering. of course i don't know how your workflow is right now, but i'd think maybe you would be posing stuff OR rendering stuff, not both at the same time?
i also didn't look into the minutiae of iray, but i'd expect it to be able to start and stop specific clients on a button press so you could probably do something like "have it render on all machines while i'm afk, stop rendering on the main workstation while i'm working on it, keep the other machines rendering all the time" or something like that.

since it's a software made by nvidia as far as i understand, it might even be more performant than using daz itself. or make better use of the gpu hardware or whatever.

i might have to try that one myself... sounds interesting. too bad i don't really have anything to render... and my best nvidia card is a 4060... eh... maybe 3d print models...
It is a great idea and probably the way I will go in my next upgrade. A fast computer for still renders, and a cheaper for animations.

Workflow? Start with an update storyline. Write some dialogue, imagine some scenes. Start a render. Abort. Tweak. Re-start render. Sometimes 3-4-5 times each one. Because the Daz work window isn't wysiwyg. Often their expressions, especially the eyes, are off. Or when you render you realize that their pose is a off, there's a poke through, or their body language doesn't match what they should be feeling and so on.

That's funny. Hell, I ain't dead. I'm just taking a little break.

The two power supplies I'm running now to test out the new render box are loaners from the local computer shop, and I have an electrician coming on Saturday to run a new line so each psu has it's own dedicated circuit. I should be back in business by the end end of the week. Then I'm going to start getting caught up on my backlog.

And all will be as if this never happened. Except for my bald headed avatar. It was the MC from my very first game, I really should update it.
